Brief history and description

The round tower, named Koromyslova, rises at the corner of the upland section of the Kremlin, above the Pochainsky ravine. The tower is protected by a natural barrier in the form of a steep slope and slightly protrudes beyond the line of the fortress walls, which increases the field of fire.

Like all the towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Koromyslova has four "battles" (battle tiers). The plantar battle (lower tier), now covered with soil, is equipped with combat windows located at a height of 30-40 centimeters from the surface of the earth, which made it possible to conduct flat fire to "clear the ditch" from the enemy.

Two tiers of medium combat have combat pechures, in which small-caliber squeaks were placed. So, in 1622 and 1663, one copper squeak on wheels was installed on the Rocker Tower.... On the upper tier there was a battle platform with loopholes and battlements.

Additional battle chambers are located in the thickness of the fortress walls adjacent to the tower. The loopholes are not located one above the other, but in a fan pattern, due to which the “dead” (unaffected) space is reduced - the territory adjacent to the tower, inaccessible for shelling by the defenders of the fortress.

Two loopholes were used for firing along the strands, and one combat chamber, facing the "field", was intended to flank the enemy on the approaches to the Kremlin. There are two entrances to the Koromyslov tower: the lower one is arranged in the thickness of the wall to the left of the tower, and the upper one is from the battle area. If you look at the structure from the opposite side of the Pochaina ravine, you will notice that the tower, together with the adjoining spans (walls), resembles a rocker in shape. The spindle, stretching between the Koromyslovaya and Taynitskaya towers, is unmatched in length (205 meters) in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. This is due to the fact that the steep slope was extremely inconvenient for the storming enemy, and the builders only strengthened the slopes with fortress walls. The lower part is made of white limestone to the height of the half-shaft to increase the strength of the citadel.

The rest of the walls are built of dark brown bricks. In the 1700s, the tower tilted due to erosion in front of it. The danger of collapse was eliminated in the middle of the 19th century.when the city authorities equipped the Zelensky Congress and strengthened the slope of the ravine with soil. Until 1886, an archive was housed within the walls of the ancient building. During the 1965 restoration in the Koromyslovaya Tower, the ceilings of the upper tier and the hipped roof were restored.
